Fake a fuller look with these foolproof volume-building hacks and accessories. In an ideal world everyone would be rocking a flawlessly shaped skull and a perfect head of voluminous healthy hair all your own. Unfortunately, this is rarely the case…and even seemingly “perfect” celebrities have an army of hair specialists working behind the scenes to create this ideal.
If your hair may have the unruly habit of falling to both sides atop of your head, leaving a little more of your scalp visible than you would like to show, or if you struggle with flat, lifeless hair...there are fixes!
Chances are, you have a favorite place to part your hair. It's where your hair likes to fall naturally (somewhere in the middle or off-center), or on the side closest to it. Problem is, that's also where your hair lies the flattest, and you're training it to stay that way. Flipping your part to the opposite side creates instant volume at the crown; if you're worried about looking lopsided, then do it while your hair is still wet. To build the most height, try a deep side part on the opposite side in dry hair, misting lightly with hairspray to hold.
Teasing hair has acquired a bad rap, mostly because if done incorrectly with the wrong tools…you end creating a tangled, frizzy mess. But back combing has been the go-to hair hack of professional hairdressers for decades. The right way to tease? Work the ROOTS only, using a large paddle brush (never, ever a fine-toothed comb). To make the volume last, spray each back-brushed area with hairspray. Once you've completed all the sections, let down the rest of the hair, leaving it smooth.
